We are happy to hear that the new “EU Taxonomy Study – Evaluating the market-readiness of the EU taxonomy criteria for buildings” recommends to use of CRREM for assessing the carbon performance of existing buildings.

The study initiated by CRREM partner and GSIC member DGNB and others states, that in order to improve the performance of existing or recently renovated buildings, energy monitoring and management systems are necessary, but have to accompanied by tracking GHG emissions and by setting reduction targets.

Ideally, interim milestones for reducing GHG emissions based on Paris-aligned pathways would have to be set and monitored. In addition, stipulating minimum targets in terms of energy and carbon reductions is preferable.

Considering the current and expected future increase of carbon prices in Europe, long-term planning of measures is essential in order to reach carbon neutrality.

For determining the GHG emission intensity of existing buildings, the study suggests the use of our CRREM pathways.
