Market Sounding is now closed.

With your input, the objective of the Global EUI Methodology review is to evaluate if changes to the EUI Methodology would meaningfully improve decision-usefulness, Pathway accuracy, or energy-efficiency outcomes, sufficient to justify methodological revision.

All CRREM users and stakeholders are invited to participate in this Market Sounding.

To support well-informed and constructive participation, we recommend the following steps:

Step 1: Review the CRREM EUI Pathway Methodology Explainer

Start by familiarizing yourself with the CRREM EUI Pathway Methodology. This document provides the necessary foundation to understand the scope, assumptions, and structure of the Pathways.

Step 2: Review Collected Feedback on CRREM’s Global EUI Methodology (optional)

If helpful, review the Collected Feedback to see which points have already been raised with CRREM ahead of the Market Sounding. This can provide context and help spark new considerations.

Step 4: Submit your Feedback via Market Sounding Questionnaire

The online Market Sounding Questionnaire is the formal channel for submitting your feedback to CRREM. An offline version is available to support your preparation, if needed, but final submissions should be made through the online questionnaire.

01

January 7

Review & Input

Market Sounding opens.

The Market Sounding kit is published, including a summarized explanation of the current EUI Methodology, a summary of feedback that CRREM has already received, and a survey/questionnaire.

02

January 16

Review & Input

Two dedicated CRREM Townhall sessions.

Together with a member of CRREM’s Technical Council, CRREM walks through how the EUI Methodology works today and shares several ideas under consideration for improvement. Two sessions are held to cover multiple time zones (registration required).

03

January 19

Review & Input

Follow-on small group sessions.

Smaller group sessions explore specific questions in depth, supporting participants in providing complete and well-informed feedback before submitting questionnaire responses. Insights also help the Technical Council identify knowledge gaps and common themes.

04

February 16

Review & Input

Market Sounding period closes.

The CRREM team uses the following two weeks to process input and prepare a summary of key findings for the Technical Council meeting and vote.

05

March 5

Review & Input

Technical Council evaluation and vote.

The Technical Council evaluates public consultation feedback and decides whether a revision to the CRREM EUI Methodology is warranted, based on materiality, global feasibility, and overall relevance.

Key questions addressed include:

  • Can the feedback raised be adequately addressed through an alternative methodological approach?
  • Does the Technical Council approve moving forward with prototyping the integration of feedback into a revised CRREM EUI Methodology?

06

March 9

Design & Refine

Project initiation step begins.

If a revision is approved, the project progresses into the Design & Refine phase. The CRREM team converts findings into a concrete work program that defines objectives, priorities, scope, milestones, decision points, and an indicative timeline.

Data needs to be updated or validated are mapped, and the Technical Council reviews the draft work program. If approved, the Foundation Board and external stakeholders are informed of the confirmed scope moving into prototyping.

CRREM EUI Methodology Visualizer

Use the CRREM EUI Methodology Visualizer to explore how the Energy Use Intensity Pathway is constructed and how its core building blocks interact. The visualizer supports a clearer understanding of the Methodology ahead of completing the Market Sounding questionnaire.

CRREM EUI Methodology Visualizer

Building Block A

2020 Baseline EUI

The 2020 Baseline EUI is the reference energy-use intensity value used as the starting point for the Pathway. It represents the typical energy performance in the year 2020 for a given property type (e.g. office, retail, residential) within a specific jurisdiction.

Building Block B

EUI Slope

This science-based reduction curve is a representation of the year-over-year allowable energy-intensity budget, visualized as a downward-sloping trajectory.

Building Block C

Levelling Year

The Levelling Year is the year in which the declining EUI Pathway reaches the Net Zero EUI target required for alignment with a 1.5°C Global Warming scenario. From this point onward, the Pathway remains flat, reflecting the assumption that any remaining energy demand is met entirely by zero-carbon energy.

Building Block D

EUI Target

The Net Zero EUI target is the minimum residual level of operational energy use that a building is assumed to have in 2050, which can be fully supplied by zero-carbon energy sources for a given property type and jurisdiction.
