Independence by design
The CRREM Foundation is funded through philanthropic support and commercial licensing — a model designed to sustain our public-interest mission while safeguarding scientific independence. No commercial interests influence the CRREM Pathways.
Funded for Independence
The CRREM Foundation operates through two complementary revenue streams — a model designed to sustain our public-interest mission while safeguarding scientific independence.
How We're Funded
The CRREM Foundation operates through two complementary revenue streams: philanthropic grant support and commercial licensing income. This balanced model allows us to keep the CRREM Pathways freely available as a public good.
As a registered non-profit, all revenue is reinvested into pathway development, scientific research, stakeholder engagement, and operational capacity.
Our Commitment to Independence
Scientific integrity is the foundation of CRREM's credibility. No funder — whether philanthropic or commercial — has influence over methodology, pathway outputs, or governance decisions.
Independence is structurally safeguarded: the Foundation Board and Technical Council operate under formal Terms of Reference that explicitly separate funding from scientific decision-making.

How Our Funding Has Evolved
From an EU research grant to a sustainable, independent foundation — each phase of CRREM's funding reflects the initiative's growing global impact.
CRREM began as an EU-funded research project under the Horizon 2020 program, developing the first decarbonization pathways for European commercial real estate.
label EU Research GrantFive of the world's largest asset owners — APG, PGGM, NBIM, GPIF, and La Caisse — joined forces to fund the global roll-out, extending coverage to 44 countries and over 1,000 property types.
label Pension Fund ConsortiumThe CRREM Foundation was established as an independent non-profit in the Netherlands. A diversified funding model — combining philanthropic support from the Laudes Foundation with License Partner revenue — ensures long-term operational independence.
label Foundation ModelIndependence is non-negotiable. The CRREM Foundation's governance structure — including the Foundation Board and Technical Council — ensures that all pathway updates and methodology decisions are made solely on the basis of climate science and stakeholder input, never funding considerations.
