"The ecosystem [the Tool] helped create is now firmly in its next chapter." — Andrea Palmer, CEO
Strengthening focus on Pathway and Methodology development
AMSTERDAM, 4 March 2026 – The CRREM Foundation will retire the CRREM Risk Assessment Tool, the free Excel-based calculation tool available on the CRREM website, on 1 July 2026. The decision reflects the maturation of the CRREM ecosystem and a strategic refocus on CRREM’s core value-add, which is developing and maintaining the CRREM Pathways and globally consistent methods to compare buildings against them. We are extracting the Tool’s underlying components and organizing them in a fully open-access, user-friendly, CRREM Library. This is a major step forward in data transparency, methodological clarity, and simplicity.
The CRREM Pathways, Methodology, and all underlying datasets are unchanged. All data to calculate the CRREM Misalignment Year will continue to be published for open-access use.
The next era of CRREM
When the CRREM Pathways were first introduced, no established ecosystem existed to support them. The Tool made science-based decarbonization and energy pathways tangible and provided a practical way to engage with a new concept.
That ecosystem now exists. Today, the CRREM Pathways are embedded across nearly all major real estate energy management and ESG analytics platforms. Most market participants use these platforms or have built their own to assess CRREM performance as part of their investment and risk management workflows.
Maintaining a standalone Excel tool would now require disproportionate effort relative to the value it provides. Retiring it allows CRREM to concentrate on Pathway development, methodological standardization, and the comparability of CRREM performance across the market.
Focused on transparency, comparability, and simplicity
CRREM will publish the Tool’s underlying datasets, including the CRREM Pathways and emission factors, together with transparent computation guidance for calculating the CRREM Misalignment Year in an open-access library. Disentangling these components from the Tool will enhance data source transparency, methodological clarity, and overall simplicity. All materials will be available in user-friendly formats, well in advance of the Tool’s removal from the CRREM website.
CRREM’s Technical Council will continue to develop the CRREM Pathways and related guidance. The ongoing EUI Methodology Review (the first formal review of CRREM’s global energy Pathways since their initial publication) is expected to deliver enhanced guidance later in 2026 and into 2027. Any proposed changes will be subject to open public consultation before adoption, as per CRREM’s Change & Update Protocol.
The Tool remains accessible for download until 1 July 2026, and the market may continue using the Tool after its official retirement.
Andrea Palmer, CEO of the CRREM Foundation
“The Tool deserves real credit. It made the CRREM Pathways accessible at a time when the concept was new and supporting infrastructure didn’t exist. The ecosystem it helped create is now firmly in its next chapter. This decision allows us to concentrate on what the market needs most from us: science-based transition Pathways and transparent, consistent methodology to compare buildings against them. The science is not changing. Our commitment to open-access is not changing. What is changing is our global scale and the clarity of how we deliver it.”
