Amsterdam, 7 January 2026 — CRREM today opened its Market Sounding for the Global Energy Use Intensity (EUI) Pathway Methodology, launching the first phase of the Technical Council’s periodic review to ensure the Pathways keep pace with scientific advances, market feedback, and regional conditions. CRREM Pathways help real estate investors and owners assess transition risk and steer portfolios toward climate-aligned assets.
Input gathered in this phase will inform the scope of revisions the Technical Council may propose to the Global EUI Pathway Methodology.
The Market Sounding is designed to surface methodological priorities, regional nuances, and market expectations
CRREM’s first Global EUI Pathways were published in 2020, and this is the first formal review of their underlying Methodology. Outcomes of the review may generate insights relevant to future updates of the Global EUI Pathway Methodology, which CRREM undertakes on an ongoing basis. Since 2020, the scope of the CRREM Pathways has expanded significantly, now covering more than 40 countries.
Stakeholders can participate in this review by completing the Market Sounding questionnaire available on CRREM.org and joining one of the public Townhall meetings or digital small group deep-dive sessions. To support this key review process, the CRREM Foundation has appointed industry veteran Charlotte Matthews as a Strategic Advisor. Based in New York, Matthews brings 25 years of experience across real estate development, design and construction, and energy infrastructure and technology, and has advised policymakers on building and energy transition issues.
She will serve through September 2026, working with the CRREM team and Technical Council to distill key takeaways, challenge assumptions, and help ensure the Pathways reflect climate alignment objectives and transition risk signals across regions. Her technical and industry experience will support a CRREM Foundation rigorous review process aimed at keeping the Pathways credible, useful, and globally relevant as the sector accelerates energy-efficiency improvements.
Most recently, Matthews served as a Managing Director at the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), where she co-led its buildings program. Previously, she was Head of Affordable Electrification at Google (Sidewalk Labs), and Vice President of Sustainability at U.S. property developer, Related Companies. Matthews currently serves on the board of CMC Energy Services, which administers large-scale energy efficiency programs for utilities. She previously served on the board of the Institute of Market Transformation and as a board advisor to the World Resources Institute.
